The Spectrum of Developmental Disabilities activity will provide an interdisciplinary approach to the issues of brain injury in childhood. It will update the mechanisms of childhood brain injury, review the clinical syndromes (stroke, shaken baby, concussive injury and coma), present information on the interaction of injury and development, and current and proposed therapies for brain injury.</description>

Follow-up Iowa Training: June 23 and 24, 2010

The Iowa Peer Support Training Academy works to create a system for providing peer support in Iowa by working with mental health providers and consumers to embrace a philosophy of consumer involvement in wellness and recovery. The Training Academy conducts an annual week-long training to train people in mental health recovery to become Peer Support Specialists.

The 2010 training will be held at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa June 7-11, with follow-up training and testing to be held June 23 and 24.

Applications for the 2010 Iowa Peer Support Training Academy are now available. Applications are due March 31, 2010.

This course will cover characteristics of autism spectrum disorders, behavior management and a variety of strategies that are designed for working with students with high functioning autism and/or Asperger's Syndrome. The strategies will include TEACCH, social stories, the Incredible 5-point Scale, Cognitive Strategies by Michelle Garcia Winner, Power Cards, Clear Thinking, STAR Plan, and visual supports. The course will include lecture, small group activities, and video clips. Class participation is encouraged and homework assignments will be given.

Speakers:

Fern Sussman, author of "More Than Words" will present training ideas for SLPs, parents, and professionals.

Mary Schlieder, author of "With Open Arms", currently works with grade 6-12 behavioral and social challeges.

Joe Steffy has a diagnosis of autism and Down syndrome. Nonverbal, he uses an AAC device to share his story of perseverance and success.

Andrew Neiland is an active member of the Nebraska Youth Leadership Council and is using his self-advocacy skills to be a voice for all youth with disabilities.

Ruth Aspy is a licensed psychologist with the Ziggurat Group. Dr. Aspy specializes in assessment and intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorders.

Barry Grossman is a licensed psychologist and author. He, along with Dr. Aspy, wrote "The Ziggurat Model" on designing interventions for students with Asperger's Disorder and high-functioning autism.

James Emmett is a national leader in development of employment services for persons with autism spectrum disorders. He serves as CEO of Integrated Behavioral Systems, and is a partner in the consulting firm Two Steps Forward.</description>
